The ministry of hospitality is much deeper than simply providing a clean. clutter-free, quiet space. It extends beyond entertaining, giving shelter or providing food. More than that, it is a ministry of presence. Being fully present with another invites them to be fully present to the work of God in their life. 

In its truest essence, hospitality is offering the welcoming presence of God to all people. Because we’ve been fully welcomed in the loving embrace of God, we are able to extend that to others. And in doing so. we’re providing a space and place where one can be known and loved by God.

「もてなし」の務めは、単に清潔で、散らかることのない、静かな空間を提供するだけではありません。もてなすことは、接待をしたり、住まいを提供したり、食事を提供したりするだけではありません。それ以上に、それは臨在の務めです。他者と共に完全に存在することは、その人の人生における神の御業に完全に存在するよう招きます。

The Psalmist said, ‘Thou has given me room when I was in distress. As the church, we aren’t just a collection of isolated individuals, each one following our own pathway of spiritual growth. We are the family of God. Ours is a personal faith, but nor a private one. Our hospitality becomes our offering, our gift to God, reflecting on what Christ did for us. Through these experiences, I learned that practicing the gift of hospitality means caring and providing for another person-that it is nor about changing people, but offering them space in which change can take place. I learned that our hospitality should not be a way of working God and our way into the lives of other, but creating an opportunity for others to find God and his way in their lives. That what I call offering ‘holy space.”
